This course is an open entry for those who wish to work in the Operating Theatre as a technician and/or are already working in this area and would like to upskill and would like to undertake leadership roles. You do not have to undertake the Certificate IIII qualification first to enroll in Cert IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support.

For those currently working in the Operating Theatre; you may want to consider our Fast Track Option which will require you to attend to weekly classes (around 10 of them) depending on your eligibility of credit transfer, recognition of prior learning and subject to viable student numbers.

Applicant must:

Be 18 years of age or over

Attend a course information session at Mayfield Education

Complete a pre course assessment including a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LNN) robot on site at Mayfield Education and a pre training interview

Have basic computer skills and access to a personal computer device including internet to enable connectivity with learning resources.

Have COVID 19 vaccination history

To obtain the full HLT47515 – Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support qualification, students must satisfactorily complete fifteen (15) units of competency. The course is made up of ten (10) core units and five (5) pre-selected elective units.

  • BSBMED301 – Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
  • BSBMGT403 – Implement continuous improvement
  • HLTAAP002 – Confirm physical health status
  • HLTINF001 – Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
  • HLTWHS005 – Conduct manual tasks safely
  • HLTAID011 – Provide first aid
  • HLTHSS007 – Handle medical gasses safely

This course takes approximately twelve months.

The delivery mode is comprised of face to face, online learning and 80 hours of work placement.

Classes run 1 day a fortnight from 09:30-15:30 hrs.

Intake 1 2023: 17 February (Friday)
Intake 2 2023: 1 June (Thursday)

Application Closing Date

2 weeks before Orientation Day.
Late applications will be considered for the next intake if received after the closing date.

Assessments are a combination of workshop activities, written assignments and case studies in addition to workplace assessment.

A satisfactory assessment result must be achieved in each form of assessment in order to be deemed successful in attaining this accredited Certificate IV course.

Nationally Recognised Certificate and Transcript of Results showing completion of full Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support – HLT47515 qualification.

If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.

Completion of the Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support enables students to perform in a team leader role. In addition to this, students may seek to complete the Certificate IV in Leadership & Management.

Students who complete this course place themselves in a good position to find employment in this field or if already working as technicians to be considered for a more responsible role in the area of leadership and continuous improvement.
