Course Overview

The student will learn practical skills, including transporting patients, preparing and maintaining beds, infection control prevention, basic medical terminology, and workplace health and safety. This course will teach you how to support the care needs of clients in a range of settings and be trained to work effectively and compassionately with a broad spectrum of clients from all walks of life.

Traineeship

Entry Criteria

Students entering the course must meet the required entry criteria, educational standards and administrative requirements as per Mayfield Education’s Student Entry and Administration Policy and Procedure.

Applicant must:

  • Be 18 years of age or over.
  • Watch the course information online
  • Complete a pre-course assessment including a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LNND) robot.
  • Attend a pre-training interview on site at Mayfield Education Inc. or virtually via MS Teams.
  • People studying this program will need access to a personal computer device and basic computer skills, including the ability to:

– Create, save and edit Microsoft Office documents (including Word, Excel)

– Access and search the Internet.

– Download and save documents from a variety of websites.

– Record, save and upload a video using a smart device such as a mobile, laptop, or iPad.

– Upload files and images onto the Learning Management System

– Access Dropbox links.

  • Have COVID-19 vaccination history.
  •  Be able to provide the following checks within the first 8 weeks of the course:

– A current and clear National Police Check

– A current and clear Working with Children’s Check

– Healthcare category A immunisation record including flu vaccination. These are listed on the Department website.

Training Program

To obtain the full Certificate III in Health Services Assistance – HLT33115, students must satisfactorily complete a total of fifteen (15) units of competency. The course is made up of seven (7) core units and eight (8) elective units that are specific to the relevant stream chosen.

  • BSBWOR301  Organise personal work priorities and development.

Electives

  • CHCCCS026  Transport Individuals.
  • CHCCCS012  Prepare and maintain beds.
  • HLTAID009  Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • HLTHSS009  Perform General Cleaning Tasks in a clinical setting.
  • HLTTHE001  Handle and care for operating theatre equipment.
  • HLTTHE002  Assist with preparation of clients for operative procedures.
  • HLTTHE003  Provide intra-operative equipment and technical support.
  • HLTHSS007  Handle medical gases safely.
Delivery

This is delivered onsite at Mayfield Education Campus, 2-10 Camberwell Road, Hawthorn East. It takes approximately six to nine months to complete the course.

Study load 15-20 hours per week.

The delivery mode is comprised of blended learning (face-to-face, online learning, self-directed learning) and mandatory 80 hours of work placement.

Classes run 1 day a week from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm.

Assessment

Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. At Mayfield we have engaging ways of learning and assessment which includes journal writing, case studies, group presentation, assignments, role play, online learning, self-paced learning packages, short answer, and multi-choice questions.

Award

This course is a nationally recognised certificate.  Upon completion Mayfield will award you with HLT33115 CERTIFICATE III IN HEALTH SERVICES ASSISTANCE (OPERATING   THEATRE TECHNICIAN)

If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.

Pathways

Once you have you completed the Certificate III Health Services Assistance qualification; you can upskill yourself with HLT47515 – Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support.

  • Complete a credit transfer application form to receive exemptions.
  • The number of units reqiured to complete for Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technical Support will be based on the Credit Transfer exemption outcome.
