Applicant must:
Be 18 years of age or over
Attend a course information session at Mayfield Education
Complete a pre-course assessment including a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LNN) robot on site at Mayfield Education and a pre-training interview
Have basic computer skills and access to a personal computer device including internet to enable connectivity with learning resources.
Have COVID 19 vaccination history
Be able to provide checks 8 weeks into the course:
- A current and clear National Police Check
- A current and clear Working with Children Check
- Healthcare category A immunisation record including flu vaccination these are listed on the Department website https://www.health.vic.gov.au/publications/immunisation-guidelines-for-health-care-workers
The course consists of 14 Units (9 Core and 5 Preselected electives).

- CHCDIV001 – Work with diverse people
- HLTINF001 – Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
- HLTPAT001 – Identify and respond to clinical risks in pathology collection
- HLTWHS001 – Participate in workplace health and safety
- BSBMED301 – Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
- HLTPAT002 – Perform venous blood collections
- HLTPAT004 – Collect pathology specimens other than blood
- BSBOPS203 – Deliver a service to customers

- HLTAAP001 – Recognise healthy body systems
- HLTAID011 – Provide first aid
- HLTCAR001 – Perform electrocardiography (ECG)
- HLTCAR002 – Perform Holter monitoring
- HLTPAT006 – Receive, prepare and dispatch pathology specimens
This course takes approximately 6-9 months
The delivery mode is comprised of face to face, online learning and 35 hours of work placement.
Classes run 1 day a fortnight from 09:30-15:30 hrs.
Intake 1 2023: 17 February (Friday)
Intake 2 2023: 1 June (Thursday)
Application Closing Date
2 weeks before Orientation Day.
Late applications will be considered for the next intake if received after the closing date.
Assessment for the course is undertaken in a number of ways:
- Whilst on site at Mayfield in class activities, simulation workshops and in practical demonstrations
- In assignments, quizzes and other online activities, which are assessed and marked online for the whole duration of the course.
- Whilst on Work Placement which is arrange for you by Mayfield Education
Nationally Recognised Certificate and Transcript of Results showing completion of full Certificate III in Pathology collection HLT37215 qualification indicating the relevant stream completed.
If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.
Students who wish to consider this course are those who are seeking employment in the Pathology Department of Hospitals and Health Services or those already working as technicians who wish to consolidate their skills and knowledge.
Completion of Certificate III program allows students to progress to other technician programs, which have many common foundation units. In addition to this, graduates of this certificate may seek to complete the Certificate IV in Leadership & Management.
Students who complete this course place themselves in a good position to find employment in this field or if already working as technicians to be considered for a more responsible role.
