Entry Requirements for VET Student Loan Courses

(Including HLT54121 – Diploma of Nursing)

Before applying for a VET Student Loan (VSL) course at Mayfield Education Inc. (MEI), please check that you meet the entry and eligibility requirements below. These help us make sure you are ready to succeed in your studies and meet government regulations.

General Eligibility for a VET Student Loan

To apply for a VET Student Loan, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen, or
  • Be a qualifying New Zealand citizen, or
  • Hold a permanent humanitarian visa and live in Australia.

You must also:

  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Provide your Tax File Number (TFN) or a certificate of application from the ATO
  • Complete and submit your eCAF (electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form) before the census date

Academic Suitability

You need to show that you are academically ready for your course by meeting one of the following:

  • You have completed Year 12, or
  • You hold a Certificate IV or higher qualification (where English was the language of instruction), or
  • You complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills assessment approved by MEI (using the LLN Robot platform).

Course-Specific Requirements – HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing

In addition to the general VSL requirements, applicants for the Diploma of Nursing must also:

Age

  • Be at least 18 years old at the start of the course.

English Language Proficiency (NMBA Requirement)

You must meet one of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language standards by providing evidence of:

  • Completion of Year 12 in Australia (including English), or
  • Completion of at least 5 years (full-time equivalent) secondary or tertiary education in English in a recognised country, or
  • An approved English test result (IELTS, OET, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT) that meets NMBA standards.

Academic Readiness

  • Complete MEI’s Pre-Training Review (PTR) and LLND assessment to confirm course suitability.

Health and Safety Requirements

Before clinical placement, you will need to provide evidence of:

  • Current immunisations (e.g. Hepatitis B, Influenza, COVID-19)
  • A valid National Police Check and Working with Children Check (WWCC)

Fitness and Wellbeing

  • Be able to meet the physical and emotional demands of nursing practice (as described in the Inherent Requirements for Nursing).

Interview

  • Attend an interview (in person or online) with an MEI Course Coordinator to discuss your goals, readiness, and any support you may need.

Pre-Training Review (PTR)

All applicants must complete a Pre-Training Review (PTR) with an MEI Course Coordinator.
This is a friendly, one-on-one discussion to:

  • Check your current skills and goals
  • Identify any support you might need
  • Make sure the course is the best fit for you
