Course Overview

Our individual support course will give you the knowledge and essential skills needed to care for and support older people and people with disability that are unable to care for themselves.

The aim of this course is to prepare the student entering the healthcare industry to safely and effectively work with people who need assistance in the community and residential aged care facilities.

The skills gained through this qualification enables care workers to follow an individualised care plan and provide person centred care and support.

We can deliver this qualification or standalone units at your work site subject to the number of applicants at your site. Please enquire with Student Services and/or the course coordinator.

Entry Criteria

Students entering the course must meet the required entry criteria, educational standards and administrative requirements as per Mayfield Education’s Student Entry and Administration Policy and Procedure.

Applicants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or over.
  • Must have watched the course information online.
  • Complete a pre course assessment via Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LNN) robot on site at Mayfield Education and attend a pre training interview.
  • People studying this program will need an access to a personal computer device and basic computer skills, including the ability to:
    • Create, save and edit Microsoft office documents (including Word, Excel)
    • Access and search the Internet.
    • Download and save documents from a variety of websites.
    • Record, save and upload a video using a smart device such as mobile, laptop, iPad.
    • Upload files and images onto the Learning Management System
    • Access Dropbox links.
  • Have COVID 19 vaccination history.
  • Be able to provide below checks 8 weeks prior to the first clinical placement:
    • A current and clear national police check.
    • A current and clear Working with Children’s Check.
    • Healthcare category A immunisation record including flu vaccination.

Delivery
  • This is delivered onsite at Mayfield Education Campus 2-10 Camberwell Road, Hawthorn East. It takes approximately ten to twelve months to complete.
  • Study load 15-20hrs per week.
  • The delivery mode is comprised of blended learning (face to face, online learning, self-directed learning) and mandatory 120 hours of work placement.
  • Face to Face classes run 1 day a fortnight from 9.30am to 3:30pm.

Assessment

Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. At Mayfield we have engaging ways of learning and assessment which includes journal writing, case studies, group presentation, assignments, role play, online learning, self-paced learning packages, short answer, and multi-choice questions.

Award
  •  This course is a nationally recognised certificate.  Upon completion Mayfield will award you with CHC33021 CERTIFICATE III IN INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT (AGEING & DISABILITY).
  •  If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.
Pathways
  • CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing & Disability)  à CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support OR CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support
  • Once successfully completed, this course may lead to a pathway to HLT54121-Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nursing), subject to meeting entry criteria.
