Our nationally recognised Certificate III in Sterilisation Services is an appropriate baseline qualification for people who would like to work in sterilising facilities. It’s also suitable for staff involved in the preparation and sterilisation of reusable medical and surgical equipment or the preparation and sterilisation of textile packs for use in health care facilities.

Course Overview

This training will equip you with the skills and knowledge to ensure you are compliant with the requirements of Australian Standards and provides safe, effective, and efficient sterilising services.  Upon completion of the course, you will become a Sterilisation Technician and be thoroughly familiar with the concepts of microbiology, infection control, sterilising theory, and practices.

You will gain an understanding of the principles and practice of sterilisation in a health workplace. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of your role in workplace effectiveness including your ethical, legal and financial responsibilities as an employee.

Entry Criteria

Applicant must:

  • Be 18 years of age or over.
  • Attend an online or in person course information session at Mayfield Education.
  • Attend and complete a pre course assessment including a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LNN) robot on site at Mayfield Education.
  • Attend a pre training interview at Mayfield Education.
  • People studying this program will need an access to a personal computer device and basic computer skills, including the ability to:
    • Create, save and edit Microsoft office documents (including Word, Excel)- Access and search the Internet.
    • Download and save documents from a variety of websites
    • Record, save and upload a video using a smart device such as mobile, laptop, ipad.
    • Upload files and images onto the Learning Management System
    • Access Dropbox links.
  • Have COVID 19 vaccination history.
  • Be able to provide the below checks within the first 8 weeks of the course:
    • A current and clear National Police Check
    • A current and clear Working with Children Check
    • Healthcare category A immunisation record including flu vaccination. These are listed on the Department website 
Training Program

To obtain the full HLT37015 – Certificate III in Sterilisation Services qualification, students must satisfactorily complete fourteen (14) units of competency. The course is made up of ten (10) core units and four (4) pre-selected elective units.

  • HLTSTE004            Manage sterile stock.
  • HLTSTE005            Care for reusable medical devices
  • HLTWHS001           Participate in workplace health and safety.
  • HLTWHS005           Conduct manual tasks safely.

Delivery
  • This course takes ten to twelve months to complete.
  • Study load 15-20 hours per week.
  • The course includes both face-to-face and online learning, and 40 hours of work placement.
  •  Classes run 1 day a fortnight from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Assesment

Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. At Mayfield we have engaging ways of learning and assessment which includes journal writing, case studies, group presentation, assignments, role play, online learning, self-paced learning packages, short answer, and multi-choice questions.

Award

Graduates will receive a nationally recognised certificate and transcript of results showing completion of the full HLT37015 CERTIFICATE III IN STERILISATION SERVICES qualification.

If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.
