MAYFIELD EDUCATION

Our History

Mayfield Education, originally known as Mayfield Centre, was established in October 1963 to provide staff training and development for people working in public hospitals in Victoria. The Hospitals and Charity Commission established the Mayfield Centre in Toorak, which was officially open as a centre for hospital training by the Minister of Health, The Honourable R W Mack MLC, on 25 November 1963.

Ambulance Training

In 1963 the Hospitals and Charity Commission appointed Mr H. G. (Jock) Berry, former superintendent of the South Australian Ambulance Service, to the new position of Director of Ambulances for Training in Victoria. During the same year Mayfield Centre was established and provision was made for ambulance training to be conducted at the newly formed centre in addition to staff training and development for hospital personnel.

 Air Ambulance Services

The first course was offered in March 1964 and was attended by 16 ambulance superintendents. In addition to training ambulance officers the centre provided the control facilities to the air ambulance services which operated out of Moorabbin Airport. This service proved to be so effective to other parts of Victoria that all flights and patient scheduling was carried out from Mayfield Centre.

In 1975 the hospital training activities at Mayfield Centre had grown to the point where there wasn’t enough space for the ambulance officer training and the training programs for hospital staff. The Hospitals and Charities Commission approved the transfer of the ambulance training school to other premises.

Over 240 Courses and Workshops

In the late 1980’s Mayfield Centre had grown to the point where over 240 courses, workshops and seminars were being offered each year, with around 5000 hospital personnel in attendance. Many courses were conducted at hospitals around Melbourne and at hospitals in regional areas. Training was provided in management, advanced nursing techniques, extended care, occupational health and safety, along with a range of technical courses, all designed to increase knowledge and provide skills to improve the performance of those employed in health services in Victoria.

Registered Training Organisation

In the mid 1990’s Mayfield Education became a Registered Training Organisation. In 2004 Mayfield Education commenced leasing of a facility at Caulfield Hospital to accommodate the nursing program. Later in 2013 the Mayfield Board decided to invest at Hawthorn East. The redevelopment provided much needed student facilities including the lounge and computer kiosk area – with full Wi-Fi access, classroom, and a laboratory for student practical sessions.

Currently, Mayfield Education continues its historical trademark of offering specific health training in accredited and non-accredited courses in specialist health areas such as infection control, sterilisation, operating theatre, aged care & disability, allied health, diabetes, health management, nursing and health technician service areas.

Mayfield Education’s supportive learning environment has assisted in giving many students the extra confidence and skills needed to achieve their goals. Many of our students continue to advance their employment and careers, further study, and successes.

We are committed to assisting our students to achieve, learn and advance their careers. We believe that the quality of teaching, the low student to educator ratio (resulting in small class sizes) and the level of student support provided is what makes Mayfield Education different.

MAYFIELD STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

What Our Graduates Are Saying

Teachers are knowledgeable; especially Ewald who has more than 30 years’ experience in the Theatre Technician field. He brings the best out of his students. He makes his classes enjoyable with his humour whilst demanding hard work from us. He requires us to be attentive during the class to ensure our best understanding of the subjects to produce the best results possible. This ensures our every success. After a difficult start brought on by initial nervousness, I found his style helpful and easy to follow. I really enjoyed this class.

Angie

I would like to express my appreciation for the placement provided to myself to complete the medication course in 2020.

As it was an extremely difficult year for all, I  would like to sincerely thank all of who spent the time and sourced the placement. At the completion of my placement with EPC I was offered an amazing job opportunity and commenced the following week. All the staff at EPC were both helpful and encouraging throughout my placement and continue to be so now that I am no longer there as a student but employed as EEN.

Thank you again and I hope to see you while you are visiting future Mayfield students.

Melissa

I've just started my first week at X Private Hospital and the certification has come right on time for my pre-employment checks. I'd like to thank you for all the help and support you've given me at my time at Mayfield, and for seeing me through to the end.

(From an attendee at our recent conference. Mayfield education presented). The disinfection and sterilisation lecture given by Lisa Li was very informative and gave practical instruction on best practice for sterilisation. It was great to have such a vital part of our everyday practice reinforced, and the importance of strict adherence highlighted. I learnt about gold standard sterilising operations and workplace set up, common issues and how to avert these, and the importance of adhering to manufacturer’s guidelines for all solutions and processes.

Having completed my course here in recent weeks, I could not be more pleased and grateful with the current staff involved. This year has been well structured to the best of their ability, given the climate of the pandemic. I have found the coordinator and staff to be very responsive and have very much appreciated their ongoing support.
