Mayfield offers a nationally recognized Certificate 3 in Community Services for Secondary Students.

 This VETDSS (VDSS) course, available during Year 11 and 12, enables students to study alongside their VCAL and VCE, one day a week.

Beginning in February 2025, students gain valuable skills in patient care, workplace health and safety, infection control, and more.

 This course can either be run at Mayfield Education Campus (Hawthorn East) or your school.

Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of entry level community services workers who support individuals through the provision of person-centred services. Work may include day-to-day support of individuals in community settings or support the implementation of specific community-based programs.

Please note:

  • To study a VETDSS course students must have completed Year 10 English and Mathematics.
  • This is a scored VCE course program.
  • This program may be run at your school, combined with another school or on campus at Mayfield Education in Hawthorn East.
  • This program runs for 2 school years whilst you are undertaking your other year 11 and 12 subjects.

Course Details

Entry Criteria

This is an open-entry program. Please talk with your year-level coordinator, your VET in school’s co-ordinator or your school’s careers advisor. They can contact us on your behalf.

Information sessions are run in person at your school and/or online and at the session you’ll meet the teachers of this program. All teachers have qualifications in this area.

Training Program

To obtain the full CHC32015 – Certificate III in Community Services qualification, students must satisfactorily complete twelve (12) units of competency. The course is made up of five (5) core units, and Seven (7) elective units.

Unit 1 & 2 (Year 1) – 8 units

Unit 3 & 4 (Year 2) – 4 units. Scored units are available for year 2 (scored Units 3 and 4 sequence) VCE VET Community Services program.

The Certificate III in Community Services course contains the following course units:

Year 1 Units

  • HLTWHS002 – C – Follow safe work practices for direct client care
  • CHCDIV001- C – Work with diverse people
  • CHCCOM005- C – Communicate and work in health or community services
  • HLTWHS006 – C – Manage personal stressors in the work environment
  • CHCADV001 – E – Facilitate the interests and rights of clients
  • CHCCCS005- E – Conduct individual assessments
  • BSBWOR301 -E – Organise personal work priorities and development
  • CHCCCS015 – E – Provide individualised support

Year 2 Units

  • CHCCCS016 – C – Respond to client needs
  • CHCCDE003 – E – Work within a community development framework
  • CHCCDE004 – E – Implement participation and engagement strategies
  • CHCPRP001 – E – Develop and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships

 

 

Delivery

The classes and workshops are run 1 day a week during the school term.

The course takes 2 years to complete.

As part of this course, there are no clinical placement hour requirements.

Location of Delivery

This course can be run in three different configurations:

  1. On-site at your school.
  2. At another school that already runs this course.
  3. Attending classes and workshops at Mayfield Education in Hawthorn East.
Intake Dates

The dates of the program conform with school terms. There are some additional days offered for students who want to undertake some study as summer and winter school. These additional days enable students to catch up on assessments.

Assessment

Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. At Mayfield Education, we have engaging ways of learning and assessment which includes journal writing, case studies, group presentation, assignments, role play, online learning, self-paced learning packages, short answer, and multi-choice questions.

Award

At the completion of the Certificate III Community Services, you will receive points towards your VCE program. If you complete all units of competency, then you will be eligible to receive a nationally accredited certificate. Otherwise, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units completed.

Pathways

This course enables you to apply for work in a range of community service organisations.

This course contains units that can be used as credits in a large range of health-related courses including technicians, aged care, allied health, nursing etc.

These are the requirements for completing the VETDSS application:

  • Online application must be completed in the presence of the parents/guardian. The signature of the Parent/guardian is mandatory.
  • Email address for the School VET coordinator and/or Principal is mandatory.
  • Upload scanned copies of 2 forms of ID’s. Choose from the following: Birth Certificate, Australian Passport, Evidence of Australian Citizenship, and Medicare card.
