Course Details

Entry Criteria

Students entering the course must meet the required entry criteria, educational standards and administrative requirements as per Mayfield Education’s Student Entry and Administration Policy and Procedure.

Applicant must:

  • Be 18 years of age or over.
  • Watch the course information session online
  • Complete a pre course assessment including a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LNN) robot on site at Mayfield Education and a pre training interview.
  • People studying this program will need an access to a personal computer device and basic computer skills, including the ability to:

– Create, save and edit Microsoft office documents (including Word, Excel)

– Access and search the Internet.

– Download and save documents from a variety of websites.

– Record, save and upload a video using a smart device such as mobile, laptop, iPad.

– Upload files and images onto the Learning Management System

–  Access Dropbox links.

  • Have COVID 19 vaccination history.
  • Be able to provide checks 8 weeks into the course:

– A current and clear National Police Check

– A current and clear Working with Children Check

– Healthcare category A immunisation record including flu vaccination these are listed on the Department website 

    Training Program

    The course consists of 14 Units (9 Core and 5 Preselected electives).

    Core Units:

    • CHCCOM005    Communicate and work in health or community services.
    • CHCDIV001       Work with diverse people.
    • HLTINF006       Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control.
    • HLTPAT001       Identify and respond to clinical risks in pathology collection.
    • HLTWHS001     Participate in workplace health and safety
    • BSBMED301      Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately.
    • HLTPAT002      Perform venous blood collections.
    • HLTPAT004      Collect pathology specimens other than blood.
    • BSBOPS203       Deliver a service to customers.

    Electives:

    • HLTAAP001      Recognise healthy body systems.
    • HLTAID011       Provide first aid.
    • HLTCAR001     Perform electrocardiography (ECG)
    • HLTCAR002     Perform Holter monitoring.
    • HLTPAT006     Receive, prepare and dispatch pathology specimens.
    Delivery

    This is delivered onsite at Mayfield Education Campus 2-10 Camberwell Road, Hawthorn East. It takes approximately twelve months to complete the course.

    Study load 15-20hrs per week.   

    The delivery mode is comprised of blended learning (face to face, online learning, self-directed learning) and mandatory 35 hours of work placement.

    Classes run 1 day a fortnight from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

    Assessment

    Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. At Mayfield we have engaging ways of learning and assessment which includes journal writing, case studies, group presentation, assignments, role play, online learning, self-paced learning packages, short answer, and multi-choice questions.

    Award

    This course is a nationally recognised qualification. Upon completion Mayfield will award you HLT37215 CERTIFICATE III IN PATHOLOGY COLLECTION.
    If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.

    Pathways

    Students who complete this course place themselves in a good position to find employment in this field or if already working as technicians to be considered for a more responsible role.

    After successful completion, you may wish to apply for entry into other related course areas such as Diploma of Nursing or other technician programs, which have many common foundation units. In addition to this, graduates of this certificate may seek to complete the Certificate IV in Leadership & Management.
