This course is an open entry for those who wish to work in the sterilisation services or those who are already working in the area of sterilisation and reprocessing of instruments within a hospital health service and would like to upskill themselves to work as a Team Leader / Senior Technician. You do not have to undertake the Certificate IIII qualification first.

For those currently working in the Central Sterilisation Department of a hospital: you may want to consider our Fast Track Option which will require you to attend to weekly classes (around 10 of them) depending on your eligibility of credit transfer, recognition of prior learning and subject to viable student numbers.

Applicant must:

Be 18 years of age or over

Attend a course information session at Mayfield Education

Complete a pre-course assessment including a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LNN) robot on site at Mayfield Education and a pre-training interview

Have basic computer skills and access to a personal computer device including internet to enable connectivity with learning resources.

Have COVID 19 vaccination history

To obtain the full HLT47015 – Certificate IV in Sterilisation Services qualification, students must satisfactorily complete fifteen (15) units of competency. The course is made up of Eleven (11) core units and four (4) pre-selected elective units.

  • HLTSTE001 – Clean and disinfect reusable medical devices
  • HLTSTE002 – Inspect and pack reusable medical devices
  • HLTSTE003 – Sterilise loads
  • HLTSTE004 – Manage sterile stock
  • HLTSTE005 – Care for reusable medical devices
  • HLTSTE007 – Monitor and maintain cleaning and sterilisation equipment
  • HLTSTE008 – Monitor quality of cleaning, sterilisation and packaging processes
  • HLTWHS003 – Maintain work health and safety
  • HLTWHS005 – Conduct manual tasks safely
  • BSBPEF402 – Develop personal work priorities
  • BSBHRM415– Co-ordinate recruitment and onboarding
  • BSBMED301– Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
  • HLTSTE006– Chemically disinfect reusable medical devices

This course takes approximately ten to twelve months.

The delivery mode is comprised of face to face, online learning and 40 hours of work placement.

Classes run 1 day a fortnight from 09:30-15:30 hrs.

Intake 1 2023: 17 February (Friday)

Intake 2 2023: 1 June (Thursday)

Application Closing Date
2 weeks before Commencement Day.

Late applications will be considered for the next intake if received after the closing date.

Students are assessed against specific performance criteria for each unit of study. Short assignments, workbooks and workplace competency based assessments.

Nationally Recognised Certificate and Transcript of Results showing completion of full Certificate HLT47015 – Certificate IV in Sterilisation Services qualification.

If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.

Students who complete this course may wish to enhance their skills as team leaders by undertaking a Leadership and Management training course.
