This Nationally Recognised Certificate is an appropriate baseline qualification for those who wish to work in the sterilising facilities. It is also suitable for staff involved in the preparation and Sterilisation of reusable medical and surgical equipment or the preparation and Sterilisation of textile packs for use in health care facilities.

This training will equip you with the skills and knowledge to ensure compliance with the requirements of Australian Standards and provide safe, effective and efficient sterilising services. You will become thoroughly familiar with the concepts of microbiology, infection control, sterilising theory and practices.

You will gain an understanding of the principles and practice of Sterilisation in a health workplace. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of your role in workplace effectiveness including your ethical, legal and financial responsibilities as an employee.

Attend a course information session at Mayfield Education

Complete a pre-course assessment including a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LNN) robot on site at Mayfield Education and a pre-training interview

Have basic computer skills and access to a personal computer device including internet to enable connectivity with learning resources.

To obtain the full HLT37015 – Certificate III in Sterilisation Services qualification, students must satisfactorily complete fourteen (14) units of competency. The course is made up of ten (10) core units and four (4) pre-selected elective units.

This course takes approximately ten to twelve months.

If the full course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units where competency has been attained.

This course is an open entry for those who wish to work in the sterilisation services or those who are already working in the area of sterilisation and reprocessing of instruments within a hospital health service and would like to upskill themselves to work as a Team Leader / Senior Technician. You do not have to undertake the Certificate IIII qualification first.

For those currently working in the Central Sterilisation Department of a hospital: you may want to consider our Fast Track Option which will require you to attend to weekly classes (around 10 of them) depending on your eligibility of credit transfer, recognition of prior learning and subject to viable student numbers.

This short course has been designed to provide nationally recognised and accredited units of competency to existing CSSD technicians.

This unit will provide skills to the participants to enable them to comply with the Standard AS/NZS4187:2014: Reprocessing of Reusable Medical Devices in health Service organisations.

  • Currently work in a CSSD department of a hospital or clinic in the role as a technician for a minimum of 15 hours/ week.
  • Have completed Certificate III in Sterilisation Services qualification.
  • HLTSTE007 Monitor and maintain cleaning and sterilisation equipment (80 nominal hours).
  • HLTSTE008 Monitor quality of cleaning, sterilisation and packaging processes (80 nominal hours).

Blended learning includes face-to-face, Online and Work placement.

This will be a 4-day program with emphasis on knowledge and practice. Further to this participants will provide evidence of the compliance with the training package and the National Standard through workplace experience.

To accommodate busy working professionals, this program will be run over 8 weeks (1 day / fortnight). Work placement will be undertaken in their own workplace.
